Balancing Act

This world will take you for all you're worth... and then some. Even noble causes can exhaust and deplete us when we don't take the time to step back and recharge. Funny thing is, sometimes we do it to ourselves by believing we have to do things that we really don't. We have to work late. We have to say yes and yes and yes to the people who ask us for favors. We dream up ideas of perfection and then bring ourselves to the brink trying to achieve them. Then, we get sick more often. We worry. We stay up too late and get up too early. And each day, we have less and less to offer the world and the people and causes we care about. In order to give our best to any effort, we need to be our best, and to be our best, we need to be rested and centered. We need balance.

This year, I challenge you to look for that balance. Find time for the things that are important, rest included. Find activities you enjoy and mini retreats for your mind throughout the day. Say yes when you can and no when your sanity demands it.

That's all easier said than done, but I hope we can all find balance in 2013.
